Traditionally they were designed to protect the bottom of the trouser from wet, muddy floors during periods of bad weather. Some men may continue to wear them for that reason but it’s safe to say the majority wear them for the style.
Deep down I think guy on the left loved his suit and shirt so much, he didn’t want anybody creasing it.
Surely there must be a quota for the amount of space you take up, when on a train or bus. Like an unwritten rule about keeping to the confines of your seat.

We recently had the pleasure of meeting Ravi and being chosen as the tailors to make that special suit for his big day. What an honour. He opted for a navy blue wool/cashmere blend, 3 piece. The scooped neck double breasted waistcoat was such an excellent touch.
When the bottom button is applied alone it somewhat pushes the front of the jacket upwards and opens out the chest. It’s not a great look. (A small caveat is that if the suit is bespoke, chances are you can get away without it heavily affecting the jacket shape).
