I’ve been seeing these downs for a while now and simply thought of them as a fashion accessory. That was until I actually walked into uniqlo and asked questions about the ‘ultra light down jacket’ they stock. I was told about its construction and mighty fill power (the stuff that keeps you warm).
Traditionally they were designed to protect the bottom of the trouser from wet, muddy floors during periods of bad weather. Some men may continue to wear them for that reason but it’s safe to say the majority wear them for the style.

I remember first seeing it when I worked at The Orange phone shop in the Birmingham Bull ring many years ago. We had to wear a black shirt and trousers as our uniform. Even then, in the days where my daily outfit almost always consisted of a pair of trainers (‘sneakers’ for my American friends), I knew that brown shoes with our black uniform was a bad move.
